If you have been
contemplating starting a business or anything at all, you may have been asking
the question: when is the best time to start or how do I start? This may be
that nudge you need.
The best
time to start is now. Procrastination is never the answer. It will always kill
the spirit. Maybe you have not been able to figure how to start. Permit me to say that the best way
to learn to do is to do. If you want to learn to read, then start reading; to
learn writing, write. It's that simple. You learn to do something by simply
doing it. I watched my little boy grow. (He is such a cutie – 15 months old). I
observed that for every developmental stage he went through, he learnt what he
did by doing it. Times without number, he fumbled but eventually succeeded.
When he started taking his first steps, he did them trembling. Initially, he
fell every time he attempted, nevertheless, he did not stop. Every subsequent
attempt produced a better result. The more he attempted, the better he became.
Today I invariably ask him to try to stay calm but he would not. He runs all
over the house and climbs everything. That’s cute still. I enjoy him.
One enemy of
great things is a four-lettered word f-e-a-r.
The fear of failure keeps people away from trying at all. It’s good to know
that for every mistake we make doing a thing, we learn one way ‘not to do’ it
again; every experience is a teacher. In the movie, “Akeelah and the bee”,
Akeelah’s mum, Mrs. Anderson, told her that the reason she did discourage her
from participating in the spelling bee was because she did not want to see her
fail. She saw the video of the previous spelling bee, how there were 200 losers
and only 1 winner, and did not want to see her daughter lose out. In her
confession, she told Akeelah that after she (Mrs Anderson) got scholarship and
gained admission into college to study Medicine, she felt so out of place, and
convinced herself that she was going to fail. Therefore, before that could
happen, she decided to drop out. Who told her in the first place that she would
not be that 1 winner? Not attempting in the first place is failure in itself.
It is better to start and fail than not to start at all.
Again,
procrastination is another great enemy of giant strides. There is no better
time to start than now. When we wait for the right time, then, there might
never be that time. He that watches the wind will not sow, and whosoever looks
at the clouds will not reap. It is often said, “The earlier the better”. Even if
it is just a business idea, do not wait until tomorrow. Start immediately by
writing the idea down. Once you do this, the next step becomes clearer. Follow
it systematically but do not delay. One-step after the other and you are
getting there. Without the first step, you may not see the next. Just remember
that the way to start is to start and the best time to start is now. A stitch
in time saves nine... See you at the top.
